Re:Nylon
Nylon has been a key material for Prada. The debut of the brand's '84 collection Pocone in its collection of accessories and bags won it worldwide acclaim. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label and Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy, buzzbeast-ready diffusion range that Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in at the Met Gala. The Milan-based powerhouse has changed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable ReNylon fabrics. The new collection features six classic styles: a belt bag (pictured) and a shoulder bag (pictured) as well as the tote bag (pictured), duffle bag (pictured) and two backpacks - made of recycled ECONYL fabrics that are made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.
The repurposed material is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer that produces Econyl fabric out of recycled nylon waste that can be recycled repeatedly without losing its quality. It's part a larger plan to move from virgin nylon to re:Nylon throughout the entire Prada portfolio in 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. Suggested Webpage includes six new Re:Nylon handbags and a pair of ECONYL boots and shoes, and a selection of clothing made of the same fabric.
Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", the video series that showcases the revolutionary process used to create Re:Nylon bags. The first video features Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, as well as National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.
The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's switch to re-Nylon is the largest reduction in virgin nylon yet. It will save the company 70,000 barrels of crude oil per year. The move will also reduce the company's carbon emissions by approximately 57,000 tonnes. The label has recently gone fur-free on its clothes and accessories. This is the most recent sustainable initiative.
Recycled nylon
Although it's better for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon still has its own drawbacks. It's not biodegradable, and will be buried in landfills or the ocean for a long time until it is broken down into smaller particles that can cause harm to wildlife. The fabric may also shed microplastics after washing. It also consumes 50 percent less energy to make compared to regular virgin nylon and is more durable than other bag materials such as wool or cotton.
The fabric is a mixture of waste petroleum and plastics, which is derived from fossil fuels. This means that it doesn't require for more natural resources as well as the carbon emissions resulting from the production of virgin nylon. It is also less difficult than other bag materials to handle, as it does not need to be dyed or woven. This makes it a great option for bags that are frequently used, like gym or yoga gear.
In addition to its environmental advantages recycled nylon is a more durable and more flexible material than conventional cotton or polyester. It is also able to withstand the most severe wear and tear, making it ideal for backpacks and outdoor equipment. It is light and can easily be shaped and stitched to the shape you want for a backpack. Nylon is an excellent material for outdoor gear as it is resistant to water and does not absorb smells.
If you are looking for a bag that is sustainable be sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification checks for chemical residues as also social and environmental responsibility. This certification is an excellent indicator of brands that are honest and responsible.
Patagonia, for example, offers a range of backpacks and yoga gear that are made from recycled nylon, also known as Econyl. The nylon is produced in a closed-loop process which requires 50 percent less energy than virgin nylon. Moreover, the brand supports organizations that are working to protect our planet.
